Our Annual Round-Up of 2019
With the 2020 season almost within sight, we thought we’d have a look back at 2019 and reflect on some of our favourite moments. It’s been another great year with exciting new projects and challenges, so we hope you’ve enjoyed the journey as much as we have. Over the years, traveling is something we’ve all become very used to, but 2019 has seen our core team rack up a record number of miles. We operated at 76 events in no less than 8 countries, providing our services as far afield as New Zealand.
Every season, there are always a couple of standout events and this year was no exception. Regatta London was probably the most talked about event throughout the summer and it was hugely disappointing for all involved that it was not possible to go ahead. However, all the hard work that went into the planning isn’t lost! There are plans to make Regatta a permanent feature on the calendar and the event will hopefully return for 2020.
An event that did go ahead, was the Special Olympics World Games. In this, the 50th anniversary games, the world saw over 7000 athletes from 195 nations compete for more than just glory. Our team were involved in the running of the kayaking and sailing out in Abu Dhabi. It was a truly inspirational display of sportsmanship and courage and it was a privilege to be involved.
The Lake Geneva Swimming Association Classique was another of these moments. As well as being another new event for us, it was the first time our team have started an event in one country and finished in another, with the swim running the width of Lake Geneva from Lausanne, France and finishing in Evian, Switzerland.
Other new events to join the calendar include Outlaw X, The Lakesman Triathlon & We Out Here Festival. Even with these events being added late on, it was great to see so many familiar faces at these events, we really couldn’t do what we do without these! Keep an eye on the provisional 2020 calendar for more new events coming your way.
But 2019 hasn’t just been about the new. Old favourites London and Blenheim Triathlon are still going strong. Now under new ownership the future of these events is guaranteed to be exciting! As well as the seasoned faces, we had a lot of new faces join us – we hope you’ll be back next year.
Whilst we do spend the majority of our summers working on events, we are often involved in other projects, this year one of these gained some royal recognition! Working off the coast of Norfolk with the University of Southampton, we helped the research team determine the existence of archaeological deposits. Their findings have now been published and Guy from our team was invited along to Kensington Palace to receive recognition from Prince William for the role we played.
A couple more of these projects that you might have glimpsed sight of include the 25th Anniversary National Lottery Ad and the Jazz on the Water Festival at Waterloo station. Members of our team we’re involved in the safety of both these projects. We provided lifeguards to London’s Waterloo station, where a large inflatable water stage had been erected for a Jazz festival hosted by Lipton Iced Tea. As part of the National Lottery’s “The Magic Number” campaign, Swim Safety provided water safety for all water side shots.
