Session Content

Boat crew induction / refresher
Rescue boat crew inductions / refreshers are for existing boat crew team members, and those interested in joining the team this season. It allows familiarisation with the types of rescue boats we use and the casualty rescue procedures we follow. If you are unsure whether you are eligible to join the rescue boat team, please get in touch.

The morning & afternoon sessions are the same – you do not need to book onto both, however, the afternoon session is only for those refreshing their training (i.e. have previously completed the induction).  We do have some capacity restraints, so may need to swap people between session and  priority will be given to existing team members first.

Boat handling skills
This session is designed to help improve close quarter boat handling and manoeuvring, and is ONLY for experienced rescue boat team members (drivers, who have previously completed their rescue boat crew induction). This session will enable you to get some time back in the boat, especially given 2020’s reduced event season, and get you event ready in a safe and contained environment. This session is NOT a replacement for completing your annual boat crew refresher, and should be booked in addition to a refresher session.

Safety kayaker skills & SESA revalidation
This session will cover many of the key practical skills for safety kayakers, specifically looking at dealing with common issues as well as unconscious casualties and is open to all safety kayakers (whether you currently hold SESA or not).

This session will also serve as a SESA revalidation for those that require it. Details of automatic SESA extensions offered, due to COVID, can be found online here. A £5 certification fee will apply (payable on the day).

SESA course
This will be a full SESA course and will take the whole day, which does mean you will not be able to attend any other sessions (however, the kayakers skills / revalidation session will be held jointly in the afternoon). A £20 certification fee will apply for the SESA course (payable on the day).

Combined session
This short session will combine those doing their boat crew refresher and those on the SESA/safety kayak skills sessions. This is a practical session and we will look at the handover of casualties from the safety kayakers to rescue boat team.

Covid Testing

Due to the on-going Covid-19 situation, we are exploring the possibility of using lateral flow testing at our training days, as a mitigation measure due to the unavoidable close proximity of some of the training activities. This is in addition to other measures, but we feel this will offer an additional layer of protection and reassurance to help ensure the safety of all those attending. Further details will be communicated around this within the final details.

Any testing would be optional, free of charge and carried out on-site prior to the start of any sessions (which may require you to arrive a little earlier than normal).

Virtual Sessions

As will will be running fewer sessions at our training days this year, we are looking into the feasibility of running some additional sessions virtually. At present the content of these sessions have not been decided so you will not be able to book onto them, however we will keep you updated on their progress.
